League of Legends University Event

We’ve already talked about MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) games in our previous post about the Dota 2 event we organized recently. But now, we’re talking about League of Legends and the event we’re putting together at Your University.

League of Legends (abbreviated LoL) is a MOBA game developed and published by Riot Games. The game follows a free-to-play model making revenue from microtransactions. In League of Legends, you play as an unseen “summoner” taking control for your “champion”. The objective of the game is the same as in every other MOBA game, level up your champion and destroy the enemy team’s “Nexus”, located at the opposing corner of the map. In addition, you earn gold by killing enemy champions and minions and use it to buy items and enhance your champion.

League of Legends was well received upon its release in 2009 and has since gained a HUGE player base. By July of 2012, it was the most played PC game in North America and Europe. In January of 2014, over 67 million people played League of Legends per month. In terms of eSports as of June 2016, League of Legends has had over $29 million in prize money. The 2017 World Championship had 60 million unique viewers and a total prize pool of over $4 million.

Your University’s League of Legends event

University Network Gaming Society is proud to present our first LoL event and tournament. Following the basic Riot’s tournament format, there will be 16 teams in a standard 5 versus 5 format. The tournament is to be played on Summoner’s Rift map. The winner of each match goes forward, while the loser is out. In other words, it is a single elimination bracket. The winning team receives gaming peripherals as rewards, while the runner-up teams will receive Riot Points.

We’re also bringing gaming booths with PCs and consoles for you to try out other games and new releases. So tell your friends and come hang out with us and lets play some games!

Dota 2 University Event & Tournament

For quite some time, MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) games have been quite popular. Ever since League of Legends’ release, this genre has been one of the most played video game genres in the world. But Dota 2 is much much older than other games. And today, University Network Gaming Society is bringing Dota 2 event to Your University.

Dota 2 was developed and published by Valve Corporation as a sequel to Defense of the Ancients (DotA). DotA was a mod for Blizzard Entertainment‘s video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion pack Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The objective of the game is for each team to destroy an opponent’s Ancient, a structure at the opposing corner of the map. Dota 2, as every MOBA game out there, works on the basis of hero selection. At the start of the game, each player selects a hero they would like to play based on the role assigned to them. Each hero has different unique abilities and different play styles. During the match, players collect Experience Points and items to raise their hero’s power and eventually defeat the opposing team. In addition, as Dota 2 is free-to-play, revenue is made from microtransactions, such as loot boxes and the Battle Pass system called Dota Plus.

Dota 2 Esports Scene & Our Event

Being one of the most popular MOBAs, Dota 2 naturally has a large Esports scene. At Gamescom in August of 2011, Valve invited sixteen accomplished Defense of the Ancient esports teams to compete at a tournament. Two years later, it became an event known as The International. As a result, 7 years later, in 2018, the prize pool for The International reached a whopping $25 million. Tournament’s prize pool is crowdfunded through sales of Dota 2 Battle Pass.

Now, let’s talk about our event. We will hold a tournament plus some extra stuff for you to enjoy. There will be only one format, 5 versus 5 on Valve’s official map. Sixteen teams bracket in single elimination. In addition, each team will have a randomly selected opponent. The winning team of this tournament will receive cool gaming peripherals. However, we have also prepared rewards for runner-up teams, so worry not, there’s enough for everyone!

Also, we’re bringing gaming booths with PCs and consoles for you to try out. There will also be stuff for you to buy and bring home.

To sign up for the tournament, please email us at event@sotongamesoc.com. Don’t forget to include your name and your (and your teammates) gamer tags. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Arcade Classic Games University Event

You must have heard about Arcade games at some point in your life. Games like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Battlezone and many more. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, you would see Aracades everywhere across the US. They just sprang up in shopping malls, restaurants, movie theaters, and bars. Today, the University Network Gaming Society (that’s us!) is bringing back these Arcades to Your University.

But what are these arcade games?

An arcade game or coin-op game is a coin-operated entertainment machine usually installed in public places such as restaurants, bars and amusement arcades. These would include video games, pinball machines, redemption games and such. Arcades were most popular during the so-called “Golden Age” in the late 70s and early 80s. Some of the most popular Arcade games were Space Invaders (1978), Pac-Man (1980), Defender (1980), Battlezone (1980) and Galaxian (1979). By the end of 1981, estimated worth of arcade game industry was $8 billion ($22 billion in 2019).

Unfortunately, this industry saw a decline after the 1990s, reaching the new low in 1999 when it was worth $1.33 billion. That’s when video games we know today took over and the industry slowly started dying away.

We want to bring arcade games back, and to Your University.

Good news, we have organized everything for you. If you’re a fan of these nostalgic games I’m sure you will enjoy what we have in store for you. We are bringing a couple of game machines, pinball machines and much more stuff for you to try out and buy. We will also be organizing a sort-of high score based tournament in games like Pac-Man and Space Invaders. By the end of the event, the player holding the high score will receive some cool retro game rewards. So if you’re into that kind of stuff, be sure to start practicing.

Be sure to bring along your friends and let’s enjoy this nostalgic retro experience together. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Apex Legends University Event

Another Battle Royale game, huh? It seems like these past few years, this genre is all we hear about. But Apex Legends is bringing something new to the table, and that’s what we’ll be talking about today. University Networking Gaming Society is proud to present an event based around this game at Your University.

First of all, what is this new game everyone’s talking about, Apex Legends? Well, it’s a free-to-play battle royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts (EA). It was released on February 4th, 2019 without any prior marketing. What’s so special about this game is that it brings elements from many games into battle royale genre. You could say it’s a mix of PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds) and Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch. A battle royale hero-shooter. The events of the game take place 30 years after Titanfall 2. There are 3 roles, each role featuring a hero with different abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. You have roles such as Offence, Defense, Support and Recon. Players are grouped into squads of 3 and dropped on a battlefield without any gear and your objective is to be the last squad standing.

Apex Legends’ popularity.

Eight hours after the launch of the game, it surpassed a million unique players, reaching 2.5 million players within 24 hours. One week after the release, the game had reached a whopping 25 million players, and by the end of the month, that number had risen to 50 million. Apex Legends also received favorable reviews by game review sites, becoming the 2nd highest reviewed game in 2019.

Let’s talk about the event itself.

What we have in store for you today is a combination of a battle royale tournament, gaming booths and much more. But let’s talk about the tournament first. There will be only one game format. 20 Squads of 3 on Apex Legends’ default map. EA’s rules apply, we are not going to change anything. In addition, the reward for the winning squad will be a few sweet Apex Legends gaming peripherals like mousepads, keyboards, gaming mice and headsets. Second and third place will receive cosmetic rewards and loot boxes. You will also be able to buy some cool exclusive stuff at our booths, and try out some other games.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Overwatch University Tournament

Since it’s obvious that gamers are competitive by nature, the PVP (Player Versus Player) games are usually the most popular ones. And one of them is Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment’s 6 versus 6 FPS (First Person Shooter) game. So today, I want to tell you about the Overwatch event we’re organizing at Your University.

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter game published by Blizzard Entertainment in May of 2016. It’s developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. Usually described as a “hero-based shooter“, Overwatch assigns twelve players in two six-player teams. At the beginning of the match, each player selects a Hero. You have the usual “trinity” setup of Tank, DPS, and Healer. But the catch is that you can swap your hero any time you want, making this game the most flexible, unique and fast-paced shooter. In addition, the game was launched with 21 heroes, and 9 were added post-release. That way the players have enough heroes to choose which one works best for their playstyle.

Overwatch League

Overwatch League (OWL) is a professional esports league, produced by its developer Blizzard Entertainment. It follows the model of traditional North American professional sporting leagues by using a set of permanent, city-based teams. The League was announced in 2016 with the first one taking place in 2018, with a total prize pool of $3.5 million. Certainly that’s enough for players to be interested in participation. In addition, OWL is run under the MLG organization, which is also owned by Blizzard’s parent company, Activision Blizzard. 2018 Overwatch League Grand Finals were held at Barclays Center in New York City on July 27th and 28th in which the London Spitfire came out as a winner against the Philadelphia Fusion. With the score of 3-1, 3-0 they became the first OWL champions.

Now, the event itself.

We will have only one game mode this time, and that’s 6 versus 6, as the game is meant to be played. Similarly to the CSGO tournament, we organized a while back, we will have a 16 team bracket, with 3 matches total. The maps are:

  • Dorado
  • Hanamura
  • Hollywood
  • Illios
  • Nepal
  • Route 66
  • Temple of Anubis
  • Watchpoint: Gibraltar

In conclusion, each team will only have 1 chance at going further in the tournament. In other words, if you lose, you’re out, so good luck!

You can sign up for the tournament at event@sotongamesoc.com. Please include your name, and your (and your teammates) gamer tag. We are looking forward to seeing you there! And we wish you the best of luck.

World of Warcraft (WoW) University Event

I’m almost 100% sure you’ve heard about World of Warcraft, or just WoW for short, at some point, right? It’s the most popular MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) in the world, and it has been for the last 15 years. Today, I’d like to tell you about the event we’re organizing at Your University.

But first, let’s talk about what WoW is. Released in November of 2004, World of Warcraft was something new, something MMO fans haven’t had back then. In the days of EverQuest, RuneScape, Ultima Online, MMORPGs were supposed to be hard, unforgiving and time-consuming. Blizzard wanted to give players that same experience, but not as hard-core as people were used to. The time was right, Lord of the Rings trilogy had just been released, Harry Potter movies were popular, the fantasy genre was at its peak. The people needed something like WoW.

Blizzcon Cosplay Competition

Basically, Blizzard gave players exactly what they needed, and they were completely hooked. Peaking at 10 million players in 2009, and with over a hundred million registered accounts by 2014, World of Warcraft is (and hopefully will continue to be) the most popular MMO of all time.

There are 7 expansion packs for WoW:

  • The Burning Crusade
  • Wrath of the Lich King
  • Cataclysm
  • Mists of Pandaria
  • Warlords of Draenor
  • Legion
  • Battle For Azeroth
vanilla world of warcraft

Classic World of Warcraft Announcement

But the most exciting thing to happen to WoW since (probably) Wrath of the Lich King is the Classic announcement. Revealed on Blizzcon 2017, after a long “battle” between the Vanilla and modern wow fans, Blizzard agreed to start development on the original version of the game. The fans were ecstatic. Set to release in summer of 2019, Classic World of Warcraft will go back to the game’s roots and show us what the game was all about back in 2004. We’re really looking forward to experiencing it again.

Now, about the WoW event.

There will be lots of stuff for WoW fans, and MMORPG fans in general, to see at our event. In cooperation with Your University, we have managed to secure enough PCs for everyone to try out this game. You’ll be able to run dungeons and raids with your friends, play battlegrounds and arenas, and much more. In addition, we are bringing exclusive gear from Blizzard’s official store, and we will give it away to you! For instance, we have a few in-game mount and pet codes, WoW mouse pads, shirts, and backpacks.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Fortnite Battle Royale University Event

You knew this was coming, let’s be honest. Fortnite is one of the most popular games in the world right now. It seems like literally everyone is playing it. That’s why we thought it would be a good idea to organize an event around it at Your University.

First released on July 25th in 2017, Fortnite: Save the World is a survival co-op third-person shooter game where up to four players fight zombie-like creatures and defend and build their own forts. By September of 2017, Epic Games released Fortnite: Battle Royale as a free to play game mode of the original game. This version rapidly gained players, with over 10 million players in its first two weeks. This rapid growth forced Epic to separate their development team to continue working on Save the World next to Battle Royale.

With the introduction of skins and other cosmetic items to Battle Royale, Epic quickly gathered enough financial resources to organize absolutely huge events that featured the most popular streamers and YouTubers, promoting the game even further. One of such events was a live stream by Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. It was a live stream sponsored by Red Bull on New York’s Time Square. 12 hours of Fortnite content with famous guests on New Year’s Eve, absolutely amazing. In addition, Ninja and Red Bull gave out over $100.000 in bits.

Fortnite Battle Royale event details

First of all, and this is the most fun part, we are having a Fortnite Battle Royale tournament. There will be three game modes:

  • Single Free For All (Up to 60 players)
  • Duo (Up to 30 teams)
  • Squad (3 or 4 players per squad, up to 60 total players)

The winner of each bracket will be rewarded with some cool gaming peripherals. Fortnite mouse pads, headsets, shirts, and much more stuff will be given out throughout the event. And the best part, the player with the most kills at the end of the event will receive an exclusive Fortnite PC Case

You will also be able to play Fortnite: Save the World campaign with 3 other friends, and enjoy a Creative competition. Our team will decide on the best built and most fun map in Creative, and the first 3 places will receive surprise rewards.

Sign up for the tournament at event@sotongamesoc.com. Please include your name, and your (and your teammates) gamer tags. Also mention for which game mode you are signing up. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

World of Warcraft Mythic+ Tournament

In the past, we’ve held tournaments in CS:GO, Rocket League, Dota 2, and many many more other games. But this time, let’s do something different. For those of you who play World of Warcraft, this will be an amazing opportunity to test your skills in Mythic+ Dungeon runs.

What is Mythic+?

Mythic+ is a new dungeon difficulty system in World of Warcraft. It’s based on these items called “Keystones”. Unlike Heroic and Mythic difficulties, the Mythic+ system is scaling according to your keystone. In addition, you have a set amount of time to complete the dungeon and earn more rewards. The keystones have their own “affixes” that enhance the dungeon you’re running. For example, a +5 Underrot key is more difficult than +2 Underrot.

Affixes in Mythic+ can vary from basic ones where enemies in the dungeon have more HP and deal more damage to the ones where slain enemies leave behind a toxic pool which deals damage to you and heals additional monsters that stand in it.

In addition, the faster you complete the dungeon, the more rewards you get and you further upgrade your key. For example, if you finish the dungeon in 20 minutes, rather than in 30, you will receive an additional item and your keystone will be upgraded by 3 levels, instead of 1 or 2.

The Tournament

Now that I have explained the basics of Mythic+, let’s get into the tournament details. You need a total of 5 players in your party. However, all 5 players are allowed to switch characters between matches. We will have 8 teams, and only 1 can be victorious.

Each match will be played in the same dungeon, with the same keystone level to ensure the best possible balance. You can choose your compositions and are allowed to interchange players between characters also. For example, you play a Mage, your friend plays a Priest, but you would like to play Priest in the next match. In that case, you can switch PCs with your teammate and play his character.

Mythic+ Chest in World of Warcraft

There will be rewards for the top 3 teams. We have prepared some amazing gaming peripherals for the winners, as well as in-game goodies such as mounts, pets and cosmetic items for everyone that participates.

If you don’t have a character

In case you’re not a regular World of Warcraft player and you don’t have the required gear or level for the tournament, don’t worry. All you need to do is visit Battleboost.com and order a service that will help you raise your item level or general level. For example, a good service that will boost your ilvl in no time is their WoW Mythic Carry. With this boost, you will be carried through the newest raid on Mythic difficulty and will receive all the rewards, including the title and the end boss mount.

Go ahead and boost your character, and we will see you at the tournament very soon! Best of luck to everyone who participates!

Yet Another Tabletop University Event

Recently, the University Gaming Network Society organized a board game event at few universities across the US. Since it was a huge success, we are looking to bring it back, but this time, we will be focusing on RPG tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, Shadowrun, Blades in the Dark and many more!

Let’s explain tabletop RPGs first.

What you need to know about these types of games is that they can last for hours and hours. Also known as pen-and-paper role-playing games, participants describe their characters through speech. There are a certain set of rules that must be followed, but players have the freedom to improvise, meaning that their choices shape the outcome of the game. But before you start the game, each of the players assigns themselves a role they would like to play. Characteristics and statistics are recorded on a form called “Character Sheet“. Most of the time, character’s stats are based on the class you pick, but you have the freedom to change it up a bit. That is the basic tabletop RPG model.

tabletop games

One of the first role-playing games was M. A. R. Barker‘s Empire of the Petal Throne, released in 1974. But the most popular tabletop RPG is, and you’ve guessed it, Dungeons & Dragons, released also in 1974. In its first year, roughly 1000 copies were sold, followed by 3000 in 1975. In 2005, products branded Dungeons & Dragons made up over 50% of the RPG tabletop products. And even today, in 2019, you can still hear about the game here and there, showing just how tabletop RPGs withstood the test of time.

Our tabletop event, what is it about?

Well, we are bringing everything to you. We have hundreds of games to show off and play with you. There will also be some cool stuff for you to buy and bring home. We’ve managed to even dig up an exclusive Dungeons & Dragons original 1974 game. One proud gamer will be able to take it home after the event ends.

You can sign up for the event at event@sotongamesoc.com. There are no requirements this time, just invite your friends to come along and let’s enjoy this unique experience. We’re looking forward to seeing you there soon!

PUBG Battle Royale University Event

At this point, you must have heard about PUBG (Playerunkown’s Battlegrounds). It’s a battle royale game everyone’s been talking about and playing recently. There were even some official tournaments with hefty cash rewards. So, it being a very competitive game, we are looking to organize an event at Your University!

First of all, let’s talk about this “Battle Royale” game mode that has swept the gaming scene by surprise these past few years. Battle Royale game mode is a genre that has the elements of survival, exploration, eliminating your opponents and staying the last man standing at the end of the match. There are hundreds of players in a single match, each of them fighting to survive and win the game. Some examples of the more popular Battle Royale games are:

Recently, in 2017 and 2018, this game mode has completely taken over the gaming scene with the release of Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode and PUBG. Suddenly everyone was playing these games. The most popular streaming platform Twitch.tv had Fortnite and PUBG consistently at numbers 1 and 2 of the games with most viewers, sometimes even reaching millions. So you kind of have the idea how popular this game mode has become.

PUBG battle royale
PUBG Wallpaper

Let’s get into the good stuff! PUBG Battle Royale event details.

We will have few game modes this time. Those will be:

  • Single Free For all (Up to 60 players)
  • Duo (Up to 30 teams)
  • And Squads (Anywhere from 3 to 5 players per team, up to 60 players total)

We will organize everything for you! All you need to do is sign up and bring your teammates. What you need to compete:

  • Your own setup (Mouse, Keyboard, Headset, etc)
  • Bring your PC or a laptop, or have the University provide one for you

The winners of each game mode will be rewarded with some cool gaming peripherals, and the winner with most total kills at the end of the event will receive a custom built gaming PC, so better start practicing! There are also going to be booths at which you can buy some cool stuff and try out some other games.

This is a whole day event, so cancel your plans if you don’t want to miss a thing. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
