Yet Another Tabletop University Event

Recently, the University Gaming Network Society organized a board game event at few universities across the US. Since it was a huge success, we are looking to bring it back, but this time, we will be focusing on RPG tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, Shadowrun, Blades in the Dark and many more!

Let’s explain tabletop RPGs first.

What you need to know about these types of games is that they can last for hours and hours. Also known as pen-and-paper role-playing games, participants describe their characters through speech. There are a certain set of rules that must be followed, but players have the freedom to improvise, meaning that their choices shape the outcome of the game. But before you start the game, each of the players assigns themselves a role they would like to play. Characteristics and statistics are recorded on a form called “Character Sheet“. Most of the time, character’s stats are based on the class you pick, but you have the freedom to change it up a bit. That is the basic tabletop RPG model.

One of the first role-playing games was M. A. R. Barker‘s Empire of the Petal Throne, released in 1974. But the most popular tabletop RPG is, and you’ve guessed it, Dungeons & Dragons, released also in 1974. In its first year, roughly 1000 copies were sold, followed by 3000 in 1975. In 2005, products branded Dungeons & Dragons made up over 50% of the RPG tabletop products. And even today, in 2019, you can still hear about the game here and there, showing just how tabletop RPGs withstood the test of time.

Our tabletop event, what is it about?

Well, we are bringing everything to you. We have hundreds of games to show off and play with you. There will also be some cool stuff for you to buy and bring home. We’ve managed to even dig up an exclusive Dungeons & Dragons original 1974 game. One proud gamer will be able to take it home after the event ends.

You can sign up for the event at event@sotongamesoc.com. There are no requirements this time, just invite your friends to come along and let’s enjoy this unique experience. We’re looking forward to seeing you there soon!

University Hearthstone Event

We’ve all played card games at some point, right? Poker, Blackjack, Go Fish, etc. I’m sure that at some point you’ve heard about Magic: The Gathering, it’s a quite popular card game. Well, this time, we will be playing Hearthstone at Your University.

So you might be asking “What is Hearthstone?”. It was first announced at Penny Arcade Expo in 2013 and released in 2014. This quite fun, and let’s be honest, quite addicting card game quickly caught the attention of Blizzard fans. It was something different than what we would usually expect from the creators of the most popular MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) of all time. Hearthstone is based on the fantasy World of Warcraft. WoW players all over the world were instantly interested in this new card game, and soon completely hooked.

Ever since the game’s release, Blizzard has held many tournaments, including the World Championship at Blizzcon. There were hundreds of players qualifying, but only a handful made it to the championship. In 2017 prize pool for Hearthstone World Championship was a whopping 1 million USD.

Aside from the classic 1 versus 1 card game format, Hearthstone also offers some RPG-ish elements to its players. Appropriately named “Adventures”, in this game mode you can create your own, or use your classic PVP deck to play against computer-controlled “Bosses”. Don’t overestimate these Adventures, because they can be quite tricky, but also offer amazing cards as rewards for victory.

Let’s get into the good stuff, the Hearthstone event itself!

First of all, everything you need to participate is a Battle.net account, which is free to create on Blizzard‘s official website, and your own PC or a laptop. We will be holding a 1 versus 1 single-elimination tournament with 16 players, and also offering players to experience the new Adventures. There will also be enough free card packs for everyone, and exclusive Adventure giveaways.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Board Games University Event

Remember those times, before video games took over, when you would spend hours on end playing Monopoly, Risk, Scrabble, and many other board games? I bet we all remember that very fondly, and board games will always have a special place in our hearts. Well, today, we are looking to bring back that nostalgia to Your University.

You might think: “It’s 2019, aren’t board games already dead at this point?”. While that might be true for the most part, there is still a quite large audience that enjoys board games. Every year, hundreds of tabletop conventions are organized all over the world, in addition to tournaments, people can reveal their own board games! Large conventions are always huge, bringing in up to 200,000 people. There you can compete in gaming tournaments, play some of the newest and unreleased board games, buy cool stuff, and much more.

But we all know we can’t have that feeling again, and that’s perfectly fine.
