Mixed Gaming University Event

Well, it was only a matter of time before we organized something like this. If you’ve attended our previous events at universities, be sure not to miss this one. The University Network Gaming Society is bringing PCs, consoles, handheld consoles at Your University.

So what exactly does “mixed gaming” mean?

We all like gaming, right? Be it old tabletop and board games or video games, there’s something for everyone. Even if you’re not a fan of video games I’m sure we’ll have something you’ll enjoy. We want this to be our biggest event so far, so buckle up. Organized at Your University, we are bringing all sorts of PCs, peripherals, consoles and handheld devices for everyone. We will have thousands of different games of different genres for you to try out. Think RPG, RTS, FPS, MMORPG, ARPG, and many many more. Our PCs are up to date with the newest hardware for the best possible experience. In addition, we want to put together all of our gaming machines in one huge room and have everyone interact with each other. You can play co-op games with your friends, compete in PVP games, organize tournaments by yourselves and such.

There will also be a separate “chill zone” with consoles and handheld gaming machines. We’re bringing XBOX One, XBOX 360, PlayStation 3 & 4, Nintendo Switch and more. From FPS games like Halo and Call of Duty, over sports games like FIFA, PES, and NBA, to RPGs like Legends of Zelda and Witcher 3, you’ll be sure to find something you enjoy. This will be a slightly smaller event in comparison to the main PC event, as we have fewer consoles. But worry not, this is also a 2-day event, so there’s enough time for everyone to experience everything we have in store for you! If you want, though, you can bring your own consoles and controllers, and join in whenever you want! Maybe someone can even help you with that level you’ve been stuck on for some time, you never know. In addition, we will be holding booths with cool gaming gear you can buy and bring home, including gaming consoles!

This is one-of-a-kind event and you really don’t want to miss it if you enjoy video games. Everyone is welcome, so bring your friends. We’re looking forward to seeing you there very soon and play some games together!

Left 4 Dead University Co-op Event

Remember those times when you would play split-screen co-op (cooperative) video games on your TV? Games like Super Mario Kart, Goldeneye 007, Halo and many more. I bet all gamers remember those times fondly. Well, we won’t exactly be playing split screen games, but something similar. And that game is Left 4 Dead 2. The University Network Gaming Society is organizing a co-op event at Your University.

But first, let’s talk about this game and co-op games in general.

Left 4 Dead is a series of co-op FPS (first-person shooter), survival horror video games developed and published by Valve Corporation. Left 4 Dead takes place after a pandemic outbreak infection that transforms humans into zombies. In the United States, the Civil Emergency and Defense Agency (CEDA) creates safe zones with the aid of the military and evacuates as many people as possible. Some people, however, are immune to the infection, but they can carry and transfer the disease unintentionally. Four of these “carriers” are our main characters: Coach, Ellis, Nick, and Rochelle.

Left 4 Dead 2 is a co-op game, meaning you play with 3 other players. Your goal in the game is to survive and complete each mission until the campaign ends. In other words, your goal is to survive. There is a huge arsenal of weapons for you to choose from. You have 3 weapon slots, main weapons (for assault rifles, shotguns and such), a secondary weapon (pistols with unlimited ammo) and the third slot is for throwables (grenades, Molotov cocktails, pipe bombs, etc). A health bar is used to track a character’s health points, which can be regenerated with health packs. If the player’s HP drops to zero, they are knocked down and have to be healed by a friendly player before the time runs out.

Details about our Left 4 Dead Event

We will have 4 sets of 4 PCs, so 16 in total. Each team of 4 players will be able to enjoy this game and try to finish the campaign. We thought it would be fun to reward the team that finishes the campaign in the least amount of time. But we’re not revealing the rewards until after the event ends. So keep practicing, we have something cool in store for you. There will also be a gaming booth where you’ll be able to buy cool gaming peripherals and gear.

You can sign up for the event at event@sotongamesoc.com. Be sure to include your name, and bring as many friends as you can, there’s no requirement for signing up like on our other tournaments. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Apex Legends University Event

Another Battle Royale game, huh? It seems like these past few years, this genre is all we hear about. But Apex Legends is bringing something new to the table, and that’s what we’ll be talking about today. University Networking Gaming Society is proud to present an event based around this game at Your University.

First of all, what is this new game everyone’s talking about, Apex Legends? Well, it’s a free-to-play battle royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts (EA). It was released on February 4th, 2019 without any prior marketing. What’s so special about this game is that it brings elements from many games into battle royale genre. You could say it’s a mix of PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds) and Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch. A battle royale hero-shooter. The events of the game take place 30 years after Titanfall 2. There are 3 roles, each role featuring a hero with different abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. You have roles such as Offence, Defense, Support and Recon. Players are grouped into squads of 3 and dropped on a battlefield without any gear and your objective is to be the last squad standing.

Apex Legends’ popularity.

Eight hours after the launch of the game, it surpassed a million unique players, reaching 2.5 million players within 24 hours. One week after the release, the game had reached a whopping 25 million players, and by the end of the month, that number had risen to 50 million. Apex Legends also received favorable reviews by game review sites, becoming the 2nd highest reviewed game in 2019.

Let’s talk about the event itself.

What we have in store for you today is a combination of a battle royale tournament, gaming booths and much more. But let’s talk about the tournament first. There will be only one game format. 20 Squads of 3 on Apex Legends’ default map. EA’s rules apply, we are not going to change anything. In addition, the reward for the winning squad will be a few sweet Apex Legends gaming peripherals like mousepads, keyboards, gaming mice and headsets. Second and third place will receive cosmetic rewards and loot boxes. You will also be able to buy some cool exclusive stuff at our booths, and try out some other games.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!

Overwatch University Tournament

Since it’s obvious that gamers are competitive by nature, the PVP (Player Versus Player) games are usually the most popular ones. And one of them is Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment’s 6 versus 6 FPS (First Person Shooter) game. So today, I want to tell you about the Overwatch event we’re organizing at Your University.

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter game published by Blizzard Entertainment in May of 2016. It’s developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. Usually described as a “hero-based shooter“, Overwatch assigns twelve players in two six-player teams. At the beginning of the match, each player selects a Hero. You have the usual “trinity” setup of Tank, DPS, and Healer. But the catch is that you can swap your hero any time you want, making this game the most flexible, unique and fast-paced shooter. In addition, the game was launched with 21 heroes, and 9 were added post-release. That way the players have enough heroes to choose which one works best for their playstyle.

Overwatch League

Overwatch League (OWL) is a professional esports league, produced by its developer Blizzard Entertainment. It follows the model of traditional North American professional sporting leagues by using a set of permanent, city-based teams. The League was announced in 2016 with the first one taking place in 2018, with a total prize pool of $3.5 million. Certainly that’s enough for players to be interested in participation. In addition, OWL is run under the MLG organization, which is also owned by Blizzard’s parent company, Activision Blizzard. 2018 Overwatch League Grand Finals were held at Barclays Center in New York City on July 27th and 28th in which the London Spitfire came out as a winner against the Philadelphia Fusion. With the score of 3-1, 3-0 they became the first OWL champions.

Now, the event itself.

We will have only one game mode this time, and that’s 6 versus 6, as the game is meant to be played. Similarly to the CSGO tournament, we organized a while back, we will have a 16 team bracket, with 3 matches total. The maps are:

  • Dorado
  • Hanamura
  • Hollywood
  • Illios
  • Nepal
  • Route 66
  • Temple of Anubis
  • Watchpoint: Gibraltar

In conclusion, each team will only have 1 chance at going further in the tournament. In other words, if you lose, you’re out, so good luck!

You can sign up for the tournament at event@sotongamesoc.com. Please include your name, and your (and your teammates) gamer tag. We are looking forward to seeing you there! And we wish you the best of luck.

Fortnite Battle Royale University Event

You knew this was coming, let’s be honest. Fortnite is one of the most popular games in the world right now. It seems like literally everyone is playing it. That’s why we thought it would be a good idea to organize an event around it at Your University.

First released on July 25th in 2017, Fortnite: Save the World is a survival co-op third-person shooter game where up to four players fight zombie-like creatures and defend and build their own forts. By September of 2017, Epic Games released Fortnite: Battle Royale as a free to play game mode of the original game. This version rapidly gained players, with over 10 million players in its first two weeks. This rapid growth forced Epic to separate their development team to continue working on Save the World next to Battle Royale.

With the introduction of skins and other cosmetic items to Battle Royale, Epic quickly gathered enough financial resources to organize absolutely huge events that featured the most popular streamers and YouTubers, promoting the game even further. One of such events was a live stream by Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. It was a live stream sponsored by Red Bull on New York’s Time Square. 12 hours of Fortnite content with famous guests on New Year’s Eve, absolutely amazing. In addition, Ninja and Red Bull gave out over $100.000 in bits.

PUBG Battle Royale University Event

At this point, you must have heard about PUBG (Playerunkown’s Battlegrounds). It’s a battle royale game everyone’s been talking about and playing recently. There were even some official tournaments with hefty cash rewards. So, it being a very competitive game, we are looking to organize an event at Your University!

First of all, let’s talk about this “Battle Royale” game mode that has swept the gaming scene by surprise these past few years. Battle Royale game mode is a genre that has the elements of survival, exploration, eliminating your opponents and staying the last man standing at the end of the match. There are hundreds of players in a single match, each of them fighting to survive and win the game. Some examples of the more popular Battle Royale games are:

Recently, in 2017 and 2018, this game mode has completely taken over the gaming scene with the release of Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode and PUBG. Suddenly everyone was playing these games. The most popular streaming platform Twitch.tv had Fortnite and PUBG consistently at numbers 1 and 2 of the games with most viewers, sometimes even reaching millions. So you kind of have the idea how popular this game mode has become.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) Tournament at your University

Everyone likes video games, right? Well, not everyone, but chances are that if you are reading this, you enjoy spending your free time playing video games. That is why, today, we would like to bring a CS:GO tournament at Your University.

Ever heard of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, or just CS:GO for short? It is a First-Person Shooter (FPS) multiplayer game developed by Valve in 2012 that pits two teams of 5 players against each other (Terrorists versus Counter-Terrorists) tasked to eliminate the other team or complete an objective and win the match.

ESL CS:GO TOURNAMENT

The first version of Counter-Strike was a mod for Valve’s very popular game Half-Life before it’s original release in 2000. The game was a HUGE hit worldwide, and still is to this day, with official Valve tournaments happening every few months each year with cash rewards up to a few million USD. In 2018, ELEAGUE Major CS:GO Tournament was watched by over a million people on the popular streaming platform Twitch.tv thus breaking the record for the most concurrent views on a single stream at the time.

ESL ONE MAJOR

The first CS:GO tournament at Your University!

We are proud to present our first official CS:GO tournament at Your University. The rules are simple, and the requirements even simpler.

We will have two competition formats:

  • 1 versus 1 Single Elimination (20 rounds)
  • 5 versus 5 Single Elimination (30 rounds)

In 1 versus 1 format of the tournament, there will be 8 players playing against a randomly selected opponent. You will be playing on a small map designed for not more than 2 players.

In 5 versus 5 however, we will follow the standard CS:GO tournament format of 16 teams. That means single elimination and 30 rounds on Valve’s official map bracket. Maps on which these matches will be played are selected randomly, as there will only be one match between the teams.

Requirements for entering the tournament are:

  • You must have your own setup (Keyboard, mouse, headset)
  • You must bring your own PC (Or have the University provide one for you)
  • For the 5 versus 5 formats, you bring your own team of 5 players, plus one replacement player (6 total)

You can sign up for the CS:GO tournament at event@sotongamesoc.com. Please add which format you are signing up for, your first and last name, and your (and your teammates) gamer tags.

Looking forward to seeing you, and best of luck!
