Since it’s obvious that gamers are competitive by nature, the PVP (Player Versus Player) games are usually the most popular ones. And one of them is Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment’s 6 versus 6 FPS (First Person Shooter) game. So today, I want to tell you about the Overwatch event we’re organizing at Your University.
Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter game published by Blizzard Entertainment in May of 2016. It’s developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows. Usually described as a “hero-based shooter“, Overwatch assigns twelve players in two six-player teams. At the beginning of the match, each player selects a Hero. You have the usual “trinity” setup of Tank, DPS, and Healer. But the catch is that you can swap your hero any time you want, making this game the most flexible, unique and fast-paced shooter. In addition, the game was launched with 21 heroes, and 9 were added post-release. That way the players have enough heroes to choose which one works best for their playstyle.
Overwatch League (OWL) is a professional esports league, produced by its developer Blizzard Entertainment. It follows the model of traditional North American professional sporting leagues by using a set of permanent, city-based teams. The League was announced in 2016 with the first one taking place in 2018, with a total prize pool of $3.5 million. Certainly that’s enough for players to be interested in participation. In addition, OWL is run under the MLG organization, which is also owned by Blizzard’s parent company, Activision Blizzard. 2018 Overwatch League Grand Finals were held at Barclays Center in New York City on July 27th and 28th in which the London Spitfire came out as a winner against the Philadelphia Fusion. With the score of 3-1, 3-0 they became the first OWL champions.
Now, the event itself.
We will have only one game mode this time, and that’s 6 versus 6, as the game is meant to be played. Similarly to the CSGO tournament, we organized a while back, we will have a 16 team bracket, with 3 matches total. The maps are:
- Route 66
- Temple of Anubis
- Watchpoint: Gibraltar
In conclusion, each team will only have 1 chance at going further in the tournament. In other words, if you lose, you’re out, so good luck!
You can sign up for the tournament at email@example.com. Please include your name, and your (and your teammates) gamer tag. We are looking forward to seeing you there! And we wish you the best of luck.
