We’ve already talked about MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) games in our previous post about the Dota 2 event we organized recently. But now, we’re talking about League of Legends and the event we’re putting together at Your University.
League of Legends (abbreviated LoL) is a MOBA game developed and published by Riot Games. The game follows a free-to-play model making revenue from microtransactions. In League of Legends, you play as an unseen “summoner” taking control for your “champion”. The objective of the game is the same as in every other MOBA game, level up your champion and destroy the enemy team’s “Nexus”, located at the opposing corner of the map. In addition, you earn gold by killing enemy champions and minions and use it to buy items and enhance your champion.
League of Legends was well received upon its release in 2009 and has since gained a HUGE player base. By July of 2012, it was the most played PC game in North America and Europe. In January of 2014, over 67 million people played League of Legends per month. In terms of eSports as of June 2016, League of Legends has had over $29 million in prize money. The 2017 World Championship had 60 million unique viewers and a total prize pool of over $4 million.
Your University’s League of Legends event
University Network Gaming Society is proud to present our first LoL event and tournament. Following the basic Riot’s tournament format, there will be 16 teams in a standard 5 versus 5 format. The tournament is to be played on Summoner’s Rift map. The winner of each match goes forward, while the loser is out. In other words, it is a single elimination bracket. The winning team receives gaming peripherals as rewards, while the runner-up teams will receive Riot Points.
We’re also bringing gaming booths with PCs and consoles for you to try out other games and new releases. So tell your friends and come hang out with us and lets play some games!
To sign up for the League of Legends tournament email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Don’t forget to include your name and your (and your teammates) gamer tags. We’re looking forward to seeing you there very soon!
