Warcraft III RTS Tournament & Event

Most of us have played, or at least heard of Blizzard Entertainment‘s Warcraft series, right? That’s the game the most popular MMORPG in the world, World of Warcraft, is based on. Today, the University Network Gaming Society is proud to announce the Warcraft III event at Your University.

Warcraft is a franchise of video games developed by Blizzard Entertainment. The series contains five core games:

  • Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Tides of Darkness, Beyond the Dark Portal, Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne
  • World of Warcraft
  • Hearthstone

The first game was released in 1994, followed by Warcraft II in 1995 and finally Warcraft III in 2002. The franchise was a huge hit, with Blizzard fans rushing to midnight releases of these games. In other words, Blizzard Entertainment had found its main franchise.

Warcraft’s lore

The Warcraft franchise takes place on fantasy planet of Azeroth (mostly). Split in several continents (Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, Northrend, Pandaria, Broken Isles, Kul’Tiras and Zandalar). The main story of this franchise is the constant war between the two factions (Alliance and Horde) with the threat from the evil titan Sargeras and his Legion sprinkled on top. In other words, the lore is rich with different characters, events, and amazing stories. If you want to read more about the game’s lore, you can do so on WoWWiki, since we don’t have time to talk about all of it.

We’re here to talk about the RTS (Real-Time Strategy) tournament and event we’re organizing at Your University. In other words, we’ll be playing Warcraft III all day long. The main tournament format is 1 versus 1, with 16 players total. As always, single elimination bracket, but 3 matches total between players. Maps will be selected randomly from official Blizzard’s map pool. In addition, you’ll also be able to play free for all or 2 versus 2, 3 versus 3 and so on, but aside from the tournament. Winner of the 1 versus 1 tournament will receive exclusive gear from Blizzard’s online store, and the runner-up will be rewarded with some in-game goodies.

Requirements to join are:

  • You must have your own setup (mouse, keyboard, headset)
  • You must have your own PC or a laptop (or have the University provide one for you)
  • Battle.net account

We’re looking forward to seeing you there, and best of luck at the tournament! To sign up, please email us at event@sotongamesoc.com and include your first and last name as well as your gamer tag.

World of Warcraft (WoW) University Event

I’m almost 100% sure you’ve heard about World of Warcraft, or just WoW for short, at some point, right? It’s the most popular MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) in the world, and it has been for the last 15 years. Today, I’d like to tell you about the event we’re organizing at Your University.

But first, let’s talk about what WoW is. Released in November of 2004, World of Warcraft was something new, something MMO fans haven’t had back then. In the days of EverQuest, RuneScape, Ultima Online, MMORPGs were supposed to be hard, unforgiving and time-consuming. Blizzard wanted to give players that same experience, but not as hard-core as people were used to. The time was right, Lord of the Rings trilogy had just been released, Harry Potter movies were popular, the fantasy genre was at its peak. The people needed something like WoW.

Blizzcon Cosplay Competition

Basically, Blizzard gave players exactly what they needed, and they were completely hooked. Peaking at 10 million players in 2009, and with over a hundred million registered accounts by 2014, World of Warcraft is (and hopefully will continue to be) the most popular MMO of all time.

There are 7 expansion packs for WoW:

  • The Burning Crusade
  • Wrath of the Lich King
  • Cataclysm
  • Mists of Pandaria
  • Warlords of Draenor
  • Legion
  • Battle For Azeroth

Classic World of Warcraft Announcement

But the most exciting thing to happen to WoW since (probably) Wrath of the Lich King is the Classic announcement. Revealed on Blizzcon 2017, after a long “battle” between the Vanilla and modern wow fans, Blizzard agreed to start development on the original version of the game. The fans were ecstatic. Set to release in summer of 2019, Classic World of Warcraft will go back to the game’s roots and show us what the game was all about back in 2004. We’re really looking forward to experiencing it again.

Now, about the WoW event.

There will be lots of stuff for WoW fans, and MMORPG fans in general, to see at our event. In cooperation with Your University, we have managed to secure enough PCs for everyone to try out this game. You’ll be able to run dungeons and raids with your friends, play battlegrounds and arenas, and much more. In addition, we are bringing exclusive gear from Blizzard’s official store, and we will give it away to you! For instance, we have a few in-game mount and pet codes, WoW mouse pads, shirts, and backpacks.

We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
